Candice S. Metallic is a citizen of the Listuguj Mi’gmaq Nation. She holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, a certificate from the Program of Legal Studies for Native People at the University of Saskatchewan and a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of British Columbia. Candice Metallic has been a member of bar in British Columbia since 1997 and Ontario since 2006.

 
Ms. Metallic continues to practice in the area of Aboriginal and Treaty rights, having worked in litigation relating to the rights of First Nations peoples as an articled student in the seminal case of Delgamuukw v. British Columbia at the Supreme Court of Canada as well as litigation for other First Nations clients; as legal counsel to the Indian Claims Commission; and as in house legal counsel to the Assembly of First Nations. While at the AFN, Ms. Metallic was a member of the drafting team that produced the Specific Claims Tribunal Act, assisted former National Chief Phil Fontaine in the procurement of the historic apology delivered by the Honorable Prime Minister Stephen Harper on June 11, 2008 regarding the Indian Residential Schools legacy as well as the pilgrimage to the Vatican City in Roma, Italy for the general and private audiences with Pope Benedit XVI whereat he expressed profound sorrow and regret for the Indian Residential Schools legacy.
 
Ms. Metallic’s practice currently focuses on assisting First Nations in developing governance and economic capacity, advocating and negotiating the resolution of land claims and other resource agreements, and the implementation of Treaties. She also has experience in the law related to consultation and accommodation of First Nation rights and interests, fisheries, matrimonial real property and citizenship.
